The western area of the city has seen the majority of new development in recent years. Home to Cummings Research Park and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, this area offers short drive times for the thousands who work in those facilities. 

Neighborhoods in the newly developing areas are built on former farm lands and offer newly constructed homes at comparatively affordable prices. Students in this area attend Columbia High School.

UAH is located at the edge of Cummings Research Park within this community.

The older portions of west Huntsville, primarily known as the Lowe Mill area, also offer affordable housing options which are closer to the center of the city. As a center for the arts, these neighborhoods have a unique charm and are an important element of the flavor of Huntsville.  High school students in these neighborhoods attend Butler and Huntsville High schools.

Many portions of west Huntsville have been recently annexed into the city. The westernmost boundary is now approaching I-65. 

Redstone Gateway, a state of the art office and mixed-use park is another new complex currently under development in west Huntsville. The 468-acre, master-planned project is located on Rideout Rd, adjacent to Interstate 565 at Gate 9, the main gate into Redstone Arsenal. Upon completion of its development over the next 15-20 years, the park will contain over 124,000 SF of retail, service, and restaurants, including up to 300 hotel rooms and conference facilities. It is designed as a pedestrian-friendly campus with several lakes, seating areas, pathways for walking or jogging, and public art that can be enjoyed by office tenants and visitors alike. The first building is fully leased by The Boeing Company.


Village at Providence
The Village of Providence offers residents of the western portion of the city an upscale, mixed use neighborhood with several restaurants and shops. Additional points of access within west Huntsville include the Huntsville International Airport and Bridge Street Town Center which are both located within 5-15 minutes from most neighborhoods in the area.

The commute time to the Redstone Arsenal and downtown is approximately 10-15 minutes and roughly 25 minutes to the Tennessee River.
